Red was the color for several months during 1994. These were the first two-dimensional works produced following Jamie's suicide. {Read more about this event in 1995}. After not being able to paint for at least two months, these works came in a flurry of activity and in one week I produced over 80 paintings and drawings.

This was the first use of line as shorthand to contain meaning and concept. And making these paintings reminded me of the beauty of the world and how there must always exist the dark and ugly so that we may feel wonder.

These works also were the first to explore the workings of a color field. And what I remember most was my amazement with the simple yet powerful combination of a monochromatic color field with simple line to create spatial arrangements.
