2005 is bringing with it a return to the Grey Area concerns of 2002. Focusing more on content, line quality, simple shapes and large area of simplified color, these works feel like coming home.

The meaning in these latest paintings is derived from a recaptured quiet and solitude in my personal life; And while the images are hopeful they are also weighted and still, bringing with them wonder at the contradictions of everyday living.

For example, two themes have emerged that seem to counter each other--hibernation and playing dead. Hibernation becomes the stillness of sleep and time to dream. While Playing Dead is the stillness of camoflauge--the attempt to hide and escape from harmful situations. Painting about these two concepts simultaneously has brought more meaning for me to these ideas than if I had worked with them in a more linear time line.

Weights and measures, floating and sinking, stillness and movement can exist together in these works as they do in my everyday world. Painting about the contradictions, the balanced forces, is what drives this new body of work.
